The good news about Melanoma is that when it is discovered early, it has a very high cure rate. This is why examining your skin is so important! Here are some tips for identifying a concerning spot on the skin that should prompt a visit to see a dermatologist. The signs are easily remembered as the ABCDEs of Melanoma Detection!

A stands for asymmetry. Imagine drawing a line down the middle of the mole. Asymmetry means the spot is not the same on both sides, or does not mirror itself.

B stands for border. If the border is irregular, such as appearing scalloped or poorly defined, then that may be a sign of possible melanoma.

C stands for color. If the spot is not consistent in color from one area to the next, that is a possible sign of melanoma. You may see shades of tan, brown, black and sometimes white, red, or blue.

D stands for diameter. Melanoma is most commonly diagnosed at a size of 6 millimeters or greater. This is about the size of the eraser on a number 2 pencil. However, they can be smaller.

E stands for evolving. If your spot changes in color, shape, or size, then that may be a warning sign of melanoma.

As in most health cases, it is better to be safe than sorry. If a skin spot fits with any of these possible symptoms then it is definitely best to have a dermatologist evaluate it sooner rather than later. Another warning sign would be if a mole, or spot, appears on your body that differs from any of the other moles or spots on your skin.
