Melanoma can be a scary term, because it is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. But, it is important to understand that there are some common misconceptions about this disease.
Myth: I can only get Melanoma if I don’t protect my skin from the sun.
Fact: Melanoma can develop due to sun exposure, as well as being due to genetics. So, yes, melanoma may occur in places where the sun shines and does not shine.
Myth: Melanoma is only a concern for people with light colored skin.
Fact: People with brown skin (skin of color) can also get melanoma! Have you heard of Bob Marley? He died of melanoma.
Myth: No one in my family has ever had melanoma, therefore I don’t have to worry about it.
Fact: People with and without family histories of melanoma may develop melanoma.
Myth: Melanoma only shows up as new moles.
Fact: Melanoma can happen out of the blue on previously normal appearing skin, but it can also develop in an existing mole. This is why you should always have a dermatologist evaluate any moles. Have you noticed if they have changed in shape, size, or color? Another warning sign would be a mole that becomes painful, itches or bleeds.
Myth: Signs of melanoma only show up on skin that would normally be exposed to the sun.
Fact: Though it is more commonly noticed on normal skin, melanoma can also develop under the fingernails, toenails, mouth, eyes and other areas of the body you may not have considered. In nails, it may appear as a dark brown or black streak beneath the nail. For people of color, melanoma is more commonly found on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, beneath the nails, in the mouth, or on the genitals. See a dermatologist for a skin check. Some brown spots may be normal in those with darkly pigmented skin, while others may be more concerning.
